Mock Mariniere
Mock Mariniere
Though it’s an iconic staple with a timeless sensibility, the Marinière is synonymous with sea faring working folk & the French Navy, especially during the period of the late 19th century. The iconic blue and white striped knit tops were a functional layer against the wind and elements. Living and working on the south coast of New England, I’ve long thought about the idea of how we might contribute to this history, not merely copy what already exists. Working with our talented, small factory in small town TN, we perfected something special while keeping our production super analog in the style of early American work clothing. Using a sturdy and soft, striped cotton knit made in Japan, this nautical inspired base layer is designed to gently skim the body for a perfect slouchy fit with just enough ease.
An cleverly cropped sleeve keeps you from having to roll your sleeves up while a raw hem mock neck tucks inside for a chic, wide, boat neck effect of the classic Marinière —it’s a bit like a turtleneck that gets tucked inside. Having worn and played with the pattern enough times in the real world, we left our neckline raw and un-tacked to allow for a multitude of styling opportunities and for you to find the best position on your neckline, something that’s both personal and functional depending on the weather.
